2016 GMC Canyon Price, Release date, Mpg

If you are in the market right now for a small pick-up truck to haul your ATV for you weekend getaways the sheer numbering of trucks to choose from is sure to be mind numbing with all manufactures churning out all-new or revised models every few months. So to avoid making a mistake most of us usually take the safer route – that of Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, and Dodge which are the select few a proven track record. Now GMC with its truck manufacturing history from 1941 can take companies like Ford pound for pound and they have proven just by beating the sales of the iconic F-series with their Sierra lineup in 2014. To make it even tougher for the other boys, the folks at GMC will be releasing their 2016 GMC Canyon which is expected to rule the market.

2016 GMC Canyon design

In terms of looks, the 2016 GMC Canyon greatly resembles its older brother, the GMC Sierra. And that is not a bad thing because it looks absolutely beautiful. The three horizontal grille on the front, the huge front fenders, the headlamps, the roof and the door all works together to give the truck the right muscle at the right places to exude dominance when on the road. To add to safety the truck comes with the StabiliTrak® Stability Control system, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes with DURALIFE™ rotors, Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Crash Response and Remote Door Unlock features just to name a few.

The interior of the 2016 GMC Canyon is not the best looking but it is functional and well laid out. The cabin is eerily silent thanks to the Liquid applied sound technology. On the equipment front GMC is very generous with the Canyon offering tons of creature comforts such as the power windows, a rearview camera, and six-speaker audio, 4.2” diagonal color display, AM/FM stereo with USB port3 and auxiliary jack, 4-way power passenger front seat, Single-zone automatic climate control system, Remote vehicle starter system, Heated, power-adjustable, chrome, manual-folding mirror and a plethora of other options to choose from. It is interesting, however, to note that in the trims hierarchy the base model actually sits higher than the SLT variant.

2016 GMC Canyon engine and performance

The 2016 GMC Canyon comes in a total of three variants – the base Canyon, the SLE and the SLT model – all with different segment-leading engines. The base model comes with a 2.5L 16-Valve DOHC I-4 engine that produces 200 hp and 184 ft-lbs of torque; the SLT model comes with a V6 24-Valve DOHC engine pumping out a crazy 305hp of power and 270 ft-lbs of torque while the new diesel powered 2.8L 16-Valve DOHC engine is estimated to produce around 195 hp of power and a whopping 365 ft-lbs of torque. Although speculations about an all new 8-speed automatic transmission looms high, for now it is safest to go by the previous model and assume that it will come with a 6-speed manual transmission for the 2WD SL and extended cab base Canyon models while a 6-speed automatic transmission is standard for other variants. The Active Grille Shutter system which reduces aerodynamic drag and optimizes efficiency is all present on the SLE and SLT models. The Canyon also comes with an optional automatic locking rear differential that will improve its performance rough terrains.

On the fuel efficiency front, the 2016 GMC Canyon is reported to post an estimated fuel efficiency of 18 mpg city and 26 mpg on the highway with a combined 21 mpg for the 4×2 model. Figures for the 4×4 model are 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, with a combined figure of 20 mpg.
